SUMMARY: The Director of Writing Center / Assistant Professor of English willestablish and oversee the academic side of the Student Success Center, which supports Anna Maria Colleges campus culture of writing and the development of students as thoughtful writers and critical readers.

NATURE AND SCOPE: The Director will recruit, train, and supervise undergraduate and graduate writing tutors; develop and teach a tutor-preparation course; develop and assess writing center goals and programming; provide diagnostic and remediation strategies to assess and develop writing plans for high risk students; and collaborate with related departments and personnel. The Director will typically teach two first-year writing courses per semester and will work closely with the Writing Coordinator to develop curriculum that reinforces and supplements work done in the writing classrooms, The ideal candidate must have organizational skills to promote collaboration and teamwork within the Student Success Center, the learning community and the campus; provide evidence of effective communication and interpersonal skills, sensitivity to and understanding of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disabilities and ethnic backgrounds of a diverse student body; and demonstrate capacity to build and maintain academic programming, and quality curricula development and assessment as related to writing and literacy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Applicants must have earned a graduate degree (Ph.D. strongly preferred) in Rhetoric and Composition, Basic Writing Studies, Composition Pedagogy, or a related field.

Preferred qualifications include: administrative experience in a writing or learning center; knowledge of current writing center theory and practice; diagnostic and remediation assessment experience. experience supporting a diverse student population, including multilingual and first-generation student writers; familiarity with faculty development outreach, including Writing Across the Curriculum; strengths in strategic planning, leadership, budgeting, and management; and comfort with technology.
